“Towards utopia through catharsis” – this is an informal motto of our organization. We are “86” – a team of professional curators, who aim to change Ukrainian cities through culture, film and art.

 

We started in 2012 as a curatorial initiative working in the town of Slavutych. 

 

Slavutych is the youngest city in Ukraine. On the 2nd of October, 1986, the decision to build a new city for the workers of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and their families was issued. The city planning was executed in autumn and winter of the same year, and the construction itself began in December. On 26th of March, 1988, the first accommodation order was given in.

 
The construction of the city involved the architects and builders from eight Soviet Republics – Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Georgian, Azerbaijan, Armenian, Ukrainian, and Russian – thus the national tincture is seen in every quarter.

• International festival of film and urbanism “86” – vibrant annual event in the town of Slavutych;
 

• “Made in Slavutych” – participatory public art project with Czeck artist Katerzina Seda;
 

• Slavutych Film Comission – a municipal body that fosters film production in the Chernobyl and Slavutych;
 

• MyStreetFilmsUkraine – a series of films made by locals in various cities around Ukraine;
 

• 86PROKAT – independent and documentary film distribution project.
